With fall in full swing, students at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts are looking for ways to enjoy the crisp air, vibrant foliage, and everything New England has to offer. One quintessential fall experience to take advantage of is the Big E, the largest fair in the Northeast, which brings together people from all over the region to celebrate culture, food, and fun.
Held annually in West Springfield, Massachusetts, the Big E runs for 17 days, showcasing everything from agricultural exhibits to cutting-edge music performances. For MCLA students, it’s a perfect weekend getaway to unwind, indulge in New England traditions, and explore the eclectic mix of attractions. On Sunday September 22, the Office of Student Engagement offered a bus to bring students to the Big E for only $5 which provided easy access for anyone that wanted to join in on the fun.
The Big E is not just about entertainment; it also serves as a cultural touchstone for the region. For out-of-state students at MCLA, the fair offers an immersive experience of the heart of New England tradition. From agricultural exhibitions to locally made crafts, students can explore the history and culture of Massachusetts, and its neighboring states.
It is the epitome of the best of New England, featuring special exhibits from six states: Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island. This exposure deepens the sense of connection to the community, allowing students to feel more at home in their surroundings. Brigh Cote, a senior at MCLA, spent a day exploring the fair and said that her favorite part was “seeing all the animals and learning about all the different farms around New England.” It is a great opportunity to learn about the culture and community that resides in this region.
In addition to its entertainment value, The Big E offers opportunities for networking. Students interested in business, agriculture, and the arts can find vendors and artisans from across the region, sparking potential collaborations or internship opportunities. The fair’s focus on local businesses also highlights the value of supporting small enterprises, something that resonates with MCLA’s commitment to community engagement.
The event offers a lineup of concerts, rides, and games that cater to all interests. This year’s musical acts include artists from a variety of genres, giving students the chance to enjoy live performances in a festival-like atmosphere. For thrill-seekers, the midway features amusement rides that will have your adrenaline pumping. The fair also hosts parades, livestock competitions, and craft shows that provide a glimpse into the agricultural roots of the region. It’s easy for students from different backgrounds and interests to connect and enjoy themselves here.
Attending the Big E can be a fun and engaging social event for MCLA students, offering a chance to bond with friends over unique experiences. Taking advantage of an opportunity like this, with fellow students, can become a life-long memory. Cote mentioned she went with other students from MCLA and “it enhanced [her] experience by creating bonds and getting to know new people that [she] did not really know before”.
Located just a hour and a half from MCLA, the Big E makes for an ideal weekend escape. It’s a break from the rigor of classes, giving students a chance to experience something different without having to travel too far. A carpool with friends or a road trip can make the adventure even more memorable.
As students, balancing academics and fun is key, and the Big E is a great way to take a breather without losing focus on studies. A visit to the fair can provide not only a fun diversion, but also inspiration for creative projects, social connections, or relaxation before heading back into the busy semester.
